Description: Thomas
In this new piece titled *Thomas*, I’ve focused on capturing a moment of gentle innocence through watercolor and pencil. The portrait features a baby lying on its stomach against a calm blue background. From the first sketch, I wanted to communicate the warmth and tenderness that define early childhood—the subtle joy and the quiet wonder found in those wide, bright eyes and the soft curve of a smile.
The baby's skin tones are carefully layered with soft shading, emphasizing the natural contours of the face, arm, and shoulder. I paid close attention to the delicate wisps of hair, using fine, deliberate strokes to bring that fragility to life. Beneath the baby, a textured surface in muted greys grounds the composition and adds depth without pulling focus from the subject.
Creating *Thomas* was a process rooted in observation and patience. I worked to balance detail and softness, allowing the watercolor’s gentle washes to evoke warmth and life, while the pencil lines provided structure and definition. The blue backdrop offers a serene atmosphere that supports the baby’s cheerful expression, rather than competing with it.
This work came from a desire to explore the pure and unspoken emotions present in early infancy—not just to record a likeness, but to reflect a brief, joyful moment frozen in time. With *Thomas*, I aimed to present a portrait that invites viewers into an intimate, tender experience. It’s a reminder of the quiet beauty in simplicity and the profound connection we feel to new life.
As The Runner, I continue to seek out these glimpses of genuine humanity, using watercolor and pencil to reveal the nuances that define us. With *Thomas*, I’m glad to share a piece that celebrates the subtle expressiveness of a child’s world, captured with both care and clarity.
